This unit introduces the study of CM herbal medicine chemistry
and pharmacology. Areas of study include plant production of
chemical compounds and the chemical composition of active
constituents of Chinese herbal medicines. Also included are the
mechanisms by which these constituents act upon the human body
including metabolic pathways, sites of action and the potential for
interaction and toxicity. Issues relating to scheduling of herbal
medicines, adverse reactions and interactions with western
pharmaceuticals will also be looked at.
